Webinar: On its 100th birthday, is Northern Ireland working?
14:00 Wed 30 June: On its 100th birthday, is Northern Ireland working?
We are excited to announce two further talks in June, as part of our series of events aimed at reflecting on human rights developments against the backdrop of Northern Ireland’s centenary. Each talk is being hosted by Mishcon de Reya LLP, and will be an opportunity to hear from some fascinating and engaging speakers - please sign up below, through the Mishcon de Reya website.
100 years on from its creation, we look at how well or otherwise NI's political structure, economy, education and culture is functioning; as well as how it is wrestling with current issues such as equality, justice, Brexit and identity. We are pleased to have two exceptional speakers for this discussion: Sam McBride, one of the NI's foremost investigative journalists, authors and political editors, alongside Claire Hanna MP, one of NI's most prominent politicians.

Our next event will be an interview with Jeff Dudgeon MBE, the claimant behind the European Court of Human Rights case which successfully challenged NI's laws criminalising consensual sexual acts between men in private. It was simultaneously the first time that the court found in favour of LGBT+ rights. We will be discussing with Jeff his involvement in this landmark case, and his perspective on how gay rights have evolved in Northern Ireland.

Webinar: Northern Ireland’s Road to Rights - A Bill of Rights for Northern Ireland
LILA is pleased to host its first webinar in a series of events aimed at marking Northern Ireland’s centenary year. The series, ‘Northern Ireland’s Road to Rights’, will be an opportunity to reflect on human rights developments in the north of Ireland over the past century, as well as the challenges that lie ahead as Northern Ireland’s place within the UK, the island of Ireland, and Europe continues to be hotly debated.
The first event will be a webinar and discussion with Professor Colin Harvey of Queens University, on the topic of a Bill of Rights for Northern Ireland at 18:00 on Thursday 18 March 2021.
The event will be an opportunity to consider the Bill of Rights in the context of ongoing discussions of constitutional change and the right to self-determination in the north of Ireland. As post-Brexit Northern Ireland faces a future without some of the safeguards it previously enjoyed, the issue of human rights and how best to protect them has never been more relevant.
To register and receive an invite to the webinar, please email contact@londonirishlawyers.co.uk
Attendees are encouraged to email questions in advance. There will also be an opportunity to ask questions during the event.
Colin Harvey is Professor of Human Rights Law, Queen’s University Belfast and a former Head of the School of Law and Director of the Human Rights Centre. He has held visiting positions at the University of Michigan, Fordham University, and the LSE. He has served as a Commissioner on the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission, and as a member of the Northern Ireland Higher Education Council. He is a member of the Academic Panel at Doughty Street Chambers, a Senior Research Associate at the Refugee Law Initiative, School of Advanced Study, University of London and has taught on the George Washington University – Oxford University Summer Programme on International Human Rights Law, and the Master’s in International Human Rights Law at Oxford University.
